City of Archer

The City of Archer was originally established as “Deer Hammock” in the 1840s in the rolling land of the southwest corner of Alachua County. When the Florida railroad reached the village in 1858, the town was renamed Archer after James T. Archer, Florida’s first Secretary of State. Archer served as an important railroad stop from the end of the Civil War into the 1930s.

Archer’s main employer, the Maddox Foundry, was established in 1905 by William Henry “Hitup” Maddox as a machine shop to service the local mining industry. Now, in its second century of operation, the Maddox Foundry & Machine Works is operated by Maddox’s descendants, devoted to serving the great City of Alachua.

Archer proudly promotes its Historical Railroad Museum, its community center and its rich history as a staple in the Florida railroad company.

Today, Archer’s small-town charm and vintage character are kept alive through its residents and historical pride.
